Hadhramout governor calls protests over electricity outages ‘riots’ and threatens arrest

Hadhramout Gov. Faraj Al-Bahsani deployed large numbers of military forces on Monday to the coastal districts of the eastern governorate, after days of demonstrations over the deterioration of electricity services there.
In a statement, the governor threatened to impose strict measures to stop what he described as riots, referencing the protests, which included the burning of tires.
For several days, protesters have been blocking a number of main streets in multiple Hadhramout districts, denouncing the daily power outages that have reached longer than 12 hours.
The governorate would not tolerate further protests, Al-Bahsani said, threatening to arrest anyone who “carried out acts of sabotage” or blocked traffic. The phone calls of “disruptive elements” were being monitored, he added.
Al-Bahsani said the governorate would prioritize restoring electricity services.
