U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Christopher Henzel visited the city of Mukalla in Hadhramaut governorate on Monday for an unannounced visit

Us ambassador arrives in Mukalla

The Hadhramaut governor's media office reported that the U.S. ambassador, accompanied by a military and security delegation, held meetings with officials in the governorate without giving further details. The ambassador also met with the Governor of Hadhramaut, Commander of the 2nd Military Region, Major General Faraj Salemin al-Bahsani.

The visit appears to be for security reasons, specifically with regard to the presence of US military bases in the governorate. It is not clear as yet if the US has consulted the Yemeni government or dealt directly with the UAE and its backed forces.

Last July, a delegation from the U.S. State Department, headed by Assistant Secretary of State Denis Natale and the Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy in Yemen visited Mukalla City, the capital of Hadhramawt governorate.

The ambassador said the United States is currently focusing on how to support countries that have fought wars to ensure security, stressing that Hadhramaut has succeeded in achieving the first condition of stability and security.

The former U.S. ambassador to Yemen visited Mukalla, at the end of last year along with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen to hand over sophisticated boats intended to help combat piracy in the area.
