Mukalla’s Al-Rayyan Airport open to commercial flights after 5-year closure
Yemen's General Authority for Civil Aviation announced on Thursday the resumption of commercial flights to and from Al-Rayyan International Airport in Mukalla, after being closed for nearly 5 years.
In a circular/memo obtained by Almasdar Online, the Authority informed commercial airlines, other companies and international humanitarian organizations that al-Rayyan Airport has completed its preparations and is now ready to receive and operate flights.
The airport will operate as a first phase of operation with flights from from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., although the possible number of flights has not been confirmed. Its first flight after the 5 year hiatus was received last Saturday, with a navigation source at the airport indicating to Almasdar Online that this was a UN chartered flight arriving from Aden.
Al-Rayyan airport has been closed since 2015 after Al-Qaeda took control of Hadhramaut coast. However, following the liberation of the area from Al-Qaeda control in 2016, the site was used by UAE forces as both a military base and prison. This continued closure contributed to a humanitarian crisis in the area.
A committee of the Aviation Authority visited Al Rayyan airport and was briefed on the readiness of the airport early this month,on the order of presidential directives after a meeting with the governor of Hadhramaut in Riyadh.
