The rare international visit may signal growing responsibilities at home for the vice president
Vice President leads Yemen delegation at 25th Climate Conference in Madrid
Vice President Ali Mohsen Saleh Al-Ahmar on Sunday traveled to Spain to lead Yemen’s delegation of the 25th Conference on Climate Change in Madrid, according to Yemen’s official Saba news agency.
The vice president is scheduled to hold meetings with leaders and officials of participating countries to discuss relations with Yemen and ways to strengthen and develop the ties.
It marks one of a handful of visits the vice president has made outside Gulf countries since taking office in 2016 and the first such visit by a Yemeni official since the UAE announced plans to drawdown forces in the five-year-old war.
President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi typically has not mandated other officials to conduct official meetings with world leaders, signaling that the Spain trip could mean more responsibilities for the vice president amid reports of Hadi's health problems.
The Yemeni delegation to the conference includes Acting Minister of Water and Environment Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi as well as Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water and Environment and Acting Head of the General Authority for Environmental Protection Ammar Al-Awlaki.
