Martin Griffiths said in a tweet that he and Kuwaiti officials met to discuss the prospects for peace in Yemen

UN envoy to Yemen meets Kuwait deputy foreign minister

Kuwait's Assistant Foreign Minister Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah met with UN envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths on Tuesday, according to the KUNA news agency.

Kuwait has pushed for a peaceful resolution to the war since its early days, hosting negotiations in April 2016 between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the internationally recognized government of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is backed by the Saudi-led coalition. Those talks, spearheaded by Griffiths predecessor, UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, unraveled after about three months.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Griffiths and Al-Sabah discussed the latest developments in international efforts to find a solution to the Yemeni crisis, KUNA said.

In a short statement on his Twitter page, Griffiths said he and Kuwaiti officials met to discuss the prospects for peace in Yemen.

In September, Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah offered to host another round of peace talks during a speech at the UN General Assembly’s annual meeting.
