Team Sha’b Hadhramout was crowned champion of the Yemeni Football Association on Sunday afternoon, beating Wehdat Aden 3-2 in penalty shootouts at the Olympic Stadium in Seiyun, the capital city of Hadhramout in eastern Yemen. 

The match was extended into extra time, keeping the 40,000 fans hooked until its final seconds.

Eight teams from all sides of Yemen’s frontlines participated in the league, which started on Jan. 12: Sha’b Hadhramout, Wehdat Aden, Al-Tilal Aden, Ahli Taiz, Wehdat Ibb, Yarmouk, Ahli Sana'a and Hilal Al-Hodeidah.

The successful completion of the wartime tournament was a victory in itself, showing that Yemenis from all parts of the country can transcend the conflict and its social destruction through sport.
