The incident comes three days after extremists blew up the house of a commander of the SBF’s Rapid Intervention Forces

Two members of the Security Belt Forces killed by suspected Al-Qaeda gunmen in Abyan

Two members of the Security Belt Forces (SBF) were killed on Tuesday in Yemen’s southern Abyan governorate by gunmen believed to be linked to Al-Qaeda.

Masked gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on the soldiers in Abyan’s Al-Mahfad district before fleeing into the surrounding valleys and mountains, according to local residents and an official in the SBF, which is loyal to the Southern Transitional Council.

The incident comes three days after extremists blew up the house of a commander of the SBF’s Rapid Intervention Forces.

Editor's note: this story was updated to clarify the name of the SBF unit: It's Rapid Intervention Forces, not Rapid Response Forces.
